SARDHANA
is located some 63 miles north-east of Delhi, and 13 miles NNW of Meerut.
It is in the State of Uttar Pradesh. The population has grown in recent years
to over 43,000. It is predominantly Hindu, swollen by refugees as a result
of partition.
It
was the seat of the Begam Samru, a Roman Catholic, the only indigenous Christian
ruler there has ever been.
Just
as the Duke of Norfolk built Arundel Cathedral in West Sussex, England out
of his private resources, so the Begam built the magnificent Basilica of
Sardhana.
